Do Students Benefit From the Buy-to-Let Property Market?

Published 03rd Jul 2007

The residential buy-to-let sector has long benefited from student rentals in university cities and towns - often this demographic makes up the core of its client base.

A large number of landlords depend on the student population who traditionally rent property during their degrees and first years in the working world before eventually moving onto home ownership. The NLA (National Landlords Association) suggests that the relationship between landlords and students/young people is essentially a symbiotic one - having observed this week that the private letting market plays an important role in allowing young people to go to university or leave home in search of work further afield.

Spokesman for the NLA, Richard Gard said:

"That is definitely an area that the private property sector has helped out in - it is enabling people to achieve their ambitions of going to university, not just the student market – the private rental sector provides a very useful role in increasing mobility and allowing people to move away from home."

Mr Gard also pointed out that the residential lettings sector is also playing an important role in helping the government to meet its targets with regards to increasing the number of people moving into higher education. The NLA also pointed out that the government is now investing in projects which aim to increase the amount of affordable student accommodation.

With regards to this, Mr Gard commented:

"It has been acknowledged by the government, that the sector does allow a huge amount of flexibility that otherwise wouldn't be there at all."
